Company description::
Hedonism doesn’t harm happiness

The theory of the ‘hedonic paradox’ holds that pleasure seekers end up unhappy. The evidence for this theory was recently considered by sociologist Ruut Veenhoven; professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He found that people are typically happier in pleasure accepting cultures than in cultures where pleasure is rather associated with sin. Within western cultures he observed also a positive link between happiness and acceptance of pleasure and also found that happiness goes hand in hand with involvement in active leisure. With respect to consumption of stimulants he founds that spoilsports and guzzlers are less happy than modest consumers.

The report of this study is published lately in the Journal of Happiness Studies, vol. 4, nr. 4, special issue on ‘Art of Living’. The paper can be downloaded from the journals website: www.wkap.nl/journals/johs

The e-mail address of prof. Veenhoven is: veenhoven@fsw.eur.nl
